In my days as a film and television director, I knew the moment an actor walked onto the set if she was going to have a bad day—and potentially make everyone else miserable. Her “tells” were a particular look in her eyes, the way she carried herself, and the way she connected with or retreated from others.

…I might not be Oprah, but as Groskop points out: “This is not a time to be quiet, keep your head down and hope that someone might hear your modest, interesting whisper.” Deborah Shames, co-founder of Eloqui, which specializes in presentation and communication training, agrees: “There are many talented female professionals who hold themselves back. And I’m tired of it. You often hear women say they’re better behind the scenes, or that they believe if they’re not an expert they can’t talk about something. Many things are out of our control, but what is within our control is how we show up.”
